Timor Leste becomes ASEAN 11th Member State
In a historic occasion for the region, Timor-Leste, became officially part of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) as its 11th Member State. The Signing of the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste into ASEAN took place at the Opening Ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, held on 26 October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.
The declaration was signed by ASEAN Leaders together with the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste. This achievement is the result of years of discussion and cooperation between ASEAN and Timor-Leste.

A long way to integration
The integration of Timor-Leste indeed followed a long procedure. The 1.4 million country, enclave within Indonesia, officially applied for membership in 2011. ASEAN agreed in principle to admit the country in 2022 with a status of Observer. It took then another three years to grant the country its membership status.
What would be the consequence of Timor-Leste integration into the ASEAN for travelers? ASEAN membership means access to one of the world’s economic powerhouse and a population of over 670 million. The country will have the chance to attract new investments from its neighbors in a bid to develop a much needed infrastructure. One of the first likely signs of Timor-Leste integration would be a boost for the country’s international air connections.
For now, Timor-Leste capital, Dili, has links to Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore within ASEAN. Additional flights are likely to come rapidly with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Rumors already talk about the arrival of AirAsia.
New air links to come rapidly
New routes could follow in a not so distant future to Jakarta in Indonesia, Manila in the Philippines, Brunei and eventually to Bangkok. Earlier this year, both Timore-Leste and Thailand signed an agreement. It allows Timor-Leste’s airline to operate flights to all international airports in Thailand, while Timor-Leste offers reciprocal access as well.
Timor-Leste states that its tourism offers an authentic journey into Southeast Asia’s least-visited nation, where pristine coastal landscapes meet rugged mountains and ancient traditions.
Unspoiled by mass tourism, Timor-Leste invites inquisitive travelers seeking genuine cultural experiences and natural wonder. A strong asset for Timor-Leste is to be home to some of the most pristine coral reefs in the world. The nation records over 400 species, with extraordinary marine biodiversity.
The waters around Atauro Island are scientifically documented to have the highest reef fish biodiversity in the world. It makes it a paradise for underwater enthusiasts. Marine life encounters include dugongs, dolphins, migrating whales, reef shars and sea turtles in extensive coral gardens.
Another iconic destination is Mount Ramelau, Timor-Leste highest peak culmulating at 2,986 meters and a symbol of national pride. The mountain offers spectacular hiking opportunities with panoramic views stretching across the island.
