Tour manager leaves hospital after fatal rail crash
A British tour manager has been released from hospital in India following a tragic rail accident in which two British tourists died.
Great Rail Journeys, which had chartered the train, said Andrew Summerhayes was discharged this morning and will be returning to the UK ‘in due course’.
One person still remains in hospital, in a stable condition. Their family is with them, said the York-based tour operator.
The train came off the track while travelling on the Kalka to Shimla mountain railway line.
Great Rail Journeys said the majority of those involved in the accident are now back on their tour, accompanied by a senior manager from the company’s head office and a senior tour manager for India who has travelled to meet the group.
They will also be accompanied by an experienced counsellor for the rest of the trip.
A small number of the 37 customers on the trip have decided to cut short their trip and return home. Great Rail Journeys said it was making arrangements for them and would provide personal counselling when required.
CEO Peter Liney said: "We continue to co-ordinate the detail of the situation from our head office in York, working alongside our emergency response team, expert Tour Managers, trained counsellors and the FCO on the ground in India. We are, as ever, concentrating totally on assisting the families of those involved to the best of our ability."
