Touring Charleston
African-American heritage tours are growing in popularity in Charleston, SC, but they’re one of the many types of tours popular there, according to Jennifer Asnip, sales manager of the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“Tours that are very popular include history, our southern heritage and house and garden tours. We also have a Christmas tour that is very popular,” she said.
Charleston is also known for its military history. It dates back to American Revolution days, and the first shot of the Civil War was fired here.
“A lot of our tours are also combined with Myrtle Beach or Savannah. We’re centrally located between those two cities – only an hour’s drive from each one,” she said.
While the African-American tours have been increasingly popular in her four-plus years here, religious tours are also in vogue.
“We have the oldest reformed Jewish congregation here in Charleston,” she said.
Charleston is somewhat unusual in that there are many streets that cannot accommodate motor coaches. Ms Asnip helps tour operators gain the necessary permits to navigate those protected areas.
