Tourist dies after avalanche on Mount Everest
An Australian tourist and three Tibetans have died in an avalanche on Mount Everest.
ABC News reported that Australian Dean Higgins, 60, dug himself and his wife Wendy out from under the snow on the Chinese side of the mountain, before embarking on an eight hour trek back down the mountain.
But Mr Higgins, who was part of a Tibetan-led tour group when the avalanche hit, died due to altitude sickness and poor health according to reports.
The Australian Embassy confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man from southern Australia in Tibet.
State broadcaster CCTV said 154 people who had been stranded by the avalanche were rescued, 86 at the Everest base camp on the mountain’s Chinese side.
