Tourists killed by elephant on safari

Two tourists from the UK and New Zealand have been killed by an elephant in Africa.

It happened while they were on a walking safari in Zambia.

The two women were identified as Alison Jean Taylor, 67, and Easton Janet Taylor, 68.

According to local police they were part of a guided safari group in South Luangwa National Park.

Police say a female elephant attacked them from behind as they were on foot.

They were guests at the Big Lagoon Camp and were walking to another camp at the time.

The elephant was hit by gunshots fired by rangers in a bid to scare off the elephant.

“They were moving to other camps when the elephant charged from behind and both died on the spot,” said police chief Robertson Mweemba.

“We are really sorry that we have lost our visitors.”

The walking group changed their position when they saw the elephant and its calf but within minutes it then charged at them, local media reported.
