Tourists missing after Komodo Island boat sinks

Sunday, 28 Dec, 2025 0

Indonesia has closed the islands of Komodo and Padar following a boat sinking in bad weather.

The islands, famed as the home of the Komodo Dragon, are currently off limits due to an extreme weather warning for the Komodo National Park.

They are only accessible by boat.

A boat carrying 11 tourists sank in stormy weather on Friday with a family of four from Spain still missing.

The Labuan Bajo Harbormaster and Port Authority Office issued the directive to close access to the islands at the weekend.

Port Authority chief Stephanus Risdiyanto said: ‘We issued a notice to mariners temporarily closing cruises to Komodo and Padar.”

The temporary suspension will remain until the weather improves.

The boat was carrying two other foreign tourists from Spain, a tour guide, and four crew members.
