Tourists trapped in Mont Blanc cable cars
Dozens of tourists were trapped overnight in cable cars in the French Alps after the cables tangled in high winds.
Around 50 people were rescued by helicopters yesterday evening and others were able to climb out, but the rescue operation had to be suspended over night due to hazardous conditions.
This left around 30 people, including a 10-year-old boy, stranded overnight at altitudes of 3,000 metres above the glaciers.
According to reports, they had access to blankets, energy bars and water.
The cars were eventually repaired at 8am this morning, local time, and the remaining people were brought down.
The Vallee Blanche cable cars give panoramic views of Mont Blanc, linking a mountain peak above Courmayeur Courmaveur in Italy to a peak above Chamonix in France.
The three-mile journey usually takes about 30 minutes.
