Tourists want to see the sights, not just the sun

Holidaymakers want to do more than just sunbathe when they go off to foreign climes, a survey has found.

Only two out of five people stay on the beach while nearly one in three opt to go sightseeing, according to the survey, by no-frills carrier easyJet.

The research was based on questions put to 2,000 adults and also found that the next most popular holiday activity after sightseeing and sunbathing was bargain-hunting. More than one in 10 people said they enjoyed back-packing too.

An easyJet spokesman told the Press Association: “This research confirms what we have known for some time. The great British holiday is changing. People now want more than two weeks on a beach, we want to explore and really experience the country we are in.”

EasyJet announced yesterday it is launching two more routes from its new base in Germany. Daily flights will serve Alicante and Nice with fares starting at Euro 25.49 (£17) one-way including taxes. The airline added it has plans to start another four routes in the next few months.
