Transparency in community based tourism
After reading some of the stories on your site about community based tourism I felt like contributing about our ‘fair tourism program’.
Since several years I have been working with my company on tourism projects with local communities in different countries. Most of these projects are running well nowadays and are transparent in a sense that every single U$ that is spend can be traced. Also the social and environmental impacts are carefully monitored.
A succesful community based tourism project starts with tourism professionals that are also well experienced in the area of development assistance.
Unfortunately, those people are still hard to find and that’s the main reason most of the so-called community based tourism projects fail to show their financial benefits for the community.
So, the solution for transparency starts with getting rid of all those quasi-professionals who don’t have any knowledge and expertise in the field of tourism and development assistance.
