Travel agents’ dream trip turns to disaster
A dream holiday has turned into a nightmare for two New Zealand travel agents.
The two Kiwis, who won a dream cruise, are among Australians and other New Zealanders stuck eating Spam and tarts after a fire disabled their ship while cruising through the Mexican Riviera.
The couple were on board the 290-metre Carnival Splendor, with 4500 other passengers when a fire crippled the engine.
There are nine Kiwis and 24 Australians on board among 4,500 passengers.
The ship has been wallowing near the Mexican coast for three days operating only on auxiliary generators.
A company official described conditions on board as “very challengingâ€.
The cruise liner is expected reach San Diego tomorrow.
There is no refrigeration onboard after the power was knocked out. Rooms and corridors are dark.
