Travellers hit by severe floods, storms and Tube strike
Updated 3.17pm, 5 February
Travel in the UK faces disruption due to weather warnings and tube strikes.
British Airways warned this morning that high winds and storms in the London area could affect flights at London airports and urged travellers to check flight updates.
A Blue Islands’ flight to Guernsey has had to turn back to Southampton today due to the weather conditions in Guernsey.
Rail services have been disrupted, with all lines between Exeter St Davids and Penzance closed due to deteriorating weather conditions.
Other rail services are threatened by floods, landslips and falling trees and many have speed restrictions due to conditions.
Ferries are also affected with P&O Ferries’ service from Dover – Calais currently running with delays of up to 75 minutes.
Stena Line’s sailings between Fishguard and Rosslare have been cancelled due to adverse weather and P&O Ferries service between Larne and Cairnryan has been delayed.
The Met Office has issued severe warning for gales and heavy rain, with 80mph guests possible.
There are six severe flood warnings in place in the South West as well as amber warning for wind in Wales, south-west England and London and south-east England.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued seven flood alerts and one flood warning for Scotland.
In London, travellers are facing a limited Tube service until Friday morning after the RMT and TSSA unions started a 48-hour walkout at 9pm last night.
The unions want Transport for London to suspend plans to close all ticket offices and cut 950 jobs. The authority claims the measures are needed to modernise and save £50m a year.
Picket lines will be set up at Underground stations across the city, many of which will be closed. Some are offering a limited service.
About 100 extra buses will be laid on and normal services will run on London Overground and Tramlink.
A second 48-hour Underground walkout is due to begin at 21:00 GMT on 11 February.
