TSA no-shows forces Miami Airport to close a terminal

Sunday, 11 Jan, 2019 0

Mass sick-outs by TSA officers due to the parrtial government shutdown are starting to bite at Miami International Airport.

Airport management said they will close a terminal early over the coming weekend.

The airport’s Terminal G will shut down at 1pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

A dozen flights will be relocated to adjoining concourses in the afternoons, said airport spokesman Greg Chin.

The airport says the number of TSA screeners off sick is double the normal rate.

"Due to an increased number of TSA screeners not reporting to work we have decided to take this precautionary step," Chin told the Miami Herald.

TSA managers were not confident they had sufficient TSA cover to man all 11 checkpoints at the airport.

"We felt we had to make a decision before the weekend."

The government shutdown has left TSA screeners, as well as many other federal employees, without pay.

Overall, there are about 800,000 government workers working unpaid across the country.
