TSA reaches highest passenger screenings since 2019
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) saw a surge in passenger screening during the holiday weekend.
Friday’s numbers reached their highest post pandemic level with 2.71 million travelers.
It was the highest since Thanksgiving 2019.
That was an increase on Thursday by about 100,000 passengers.
The highest recorded number of travelers occurred on December 1, 2019, with more than 2.8 million
Just before the holiday, TSA Administrator David Pekoske expected about 10 million passengers through the four-day Memorial Day period.
He said the agency was well-staffed compared to last year and well prepared for crowded airports.
Last week the TSA announced a timely expansion of the PreCheck expedited passenger screening program.
Teens traveling with their parents or guardian can now join them in the fast track PreCheck line.
This is expected to speed up screening wait times.
As the travel industry recovers and the start of summer begins, the TSA’s recent checkpoint volume highlights a resurgence in air travel despite the high airfares.
