Turkey ends two-year state of emergency

Friday, 31 Jul, 2018 0

A two-year state of emergency in Turkey, imposed following an attempted coup in July 2016, has ended.

However, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said the security environment in Turkey ‘remains potentially volatile’.

It advised travellers to avoid all demonstrations and to leave an area if one develops, adding that police have used tear gas and water cannons extensively to disperse protests in Turkey.

Tourism to the country from the UK plunged two years ago following the attempted coup, which sparked demonstrations, some of them violent, in cities across Turkey. As a result, tour operators slashed their programmes to the country.

However, tourism from the UK has since picked up again and Turkey has become one of this year’s best-selling destinations, which could be partly due to increased costs in Spain following the fall in the value of sterling against the euro following the Brexit referendum.
