Two million Britons head abroad
More than two million Britons will head abroad over the Easter period, an increase of around 10% on last year. The Daily Mail reports that more than 1.5 million people will leave the country by aircraft, with some 500,000 due to travel by ferry or Eurostar over the next four days. The newspaper states that the figure, which is up from 1.8 million last year, is a “sign that the terrorist threat is not deterring holidaymakers from heading overseas”. British Airways will carry more than 110,000 travellers from Heathrow and Gatwick airports alone. The Mail quotes ABTA as saying that the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, the Balearics, Cyprus and Turkey were the most popular short-haul destinations. President John Harding reportedly said: “Easter is always one of our busiest times and I am pleased to see record numbers of our customers are once again taking advantage of the excellent deals on offer.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad
