UK holidaymakers ‘largely unaffected’ by earthquake
Holidaymakers in areas of South-East Asia outside Sumatra are continuing their holidays as normal despite yesterday’s earthquake.
A Kuoni spokeswoman told TravelMole that clients holidaying in Thailand and Sri Lanka will not be relocated or flown home. She added that Kuoni reps had contacted all of its clients in the region and had received no requests by clients wishing to return home.
No Kuoni clients were directly affected by the earthquake as the company does not operate in Sumatra. ABTA spokeswoman Frances Tuke also reported little disruption.
She said the organisation was so far not aware of any UK holidaymakers travelling with ABTA member companies being affected by the earthquake following preliminary consultations with Kuoni, TUI and Thomas Cook.
She added that hotels and emergency services in neighbouring countries have been on high alert and that hotels believed to be at risk from a potential tsunami had moved guests to higher floors.
