United ending Newark-Edmonton flights
United Airlines says it will discontinue direct non-stop flights between Edmonton and Newark in October.
The carrier said the route was "not meeting expectations" and will take to the skies for the final time on October 24.
There were high hopes for success when launched in May 2013 as it was the only direct service between Edmonton and the New York area.
United will continue other existing services out of Edmonton to Chicago, Denver, Houston and San Francisco.
Travelers who have already booked for flights beyond the cut-off date will be reaccommodated on other routes or given refunds.
Edmonton airport spokesperson Heather Hamilton called it "a setback" but said that United is still an important source of business for the airport and city.
"They’re still a major player — they’ve really made a long-term investment in Edmonton," Hamilton said.
