Universal Orlando adds family-friendly hotel
Universal Orlando will open its fourth hotel during the first quarter of 2014, the resort said last week, offering a less costly option than its three sister properties.
The 1,800-room Cabana Bay Beach Hotel will be split evenly between standard hotel rooms and family suites with room for as many as six people.
Prices will begin at $119 a night for the conventional rooms and $174 a night for the suites, significantly less than rates at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, the Hard Rock Hotel, or the Loews Royal Pacific Resort.
Cabana Bay will have a retro theme meant to evoke beachside hotels from the 1950s and 1960s, and will include a 10-lane bowling alley and a lazy river.
Universal is currently booking reservations for stays beginning March 31, 2014, though the first 600 suites are expected to open as early as January.
The Cabana Bay will open just ahead of the new Harry Potter "land" being built at Universal Studios Florida, which is expected to bring new crowds to the park.
In Miami Beach, meanwhile, the iconic Cadillac Hotel is being transformed into the Courtyard Miami Beach Oceanfront, with a new 93-guestroom oceanfront tower scheduled to open this fall.
The 263-room art deco hotel on South Beach has been given a complete redesign of the main pool area and cabanas, a new 32-foot lobby bar and lounge, and a new deck area at the Oceanfront Surfside Tiki Bar.
