Universal Studios Beijing set to open in 2020

The Universal Studios theme park planned for Beijing will open its doors to the public in 2020 according to a city official.

The first phase of the US$8 billion project will be completed in 2019 and open the following year, an official from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform was quoted by the Beijing Daily.

Construction at the park began earlier this month.

Universal has teamed up with Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co Ltd to develop the theme park which is targeted to attract 10 million visitors a year.

Asia’s third Universal attraction will measure more than 1.2 square kilometres in size.

"It will need to be large to accommodate the crowds expected, that’s why Universal is making the Beijing park its largest in the world," said Chris Yoshii, of consultancy group Leisure Asia AECOM.

Universal also operates Asian parks in Singapore and Osaka, Japan.

Park amenities announced so far include attractions based on the Jurassic Park and Despicable Me film franchises.

A second phase of construction is thought to include an aqua park and five additional resort hotels.

Meanwhile rival Disney said it expects to open its US$5.5 billion park resort in Shanghai in spring 2016.
