Update: ‘Responsible Tourism in Destinations’ conference, The Gambia
An International Conference on ‘Responsible Tourism in Destinations’ is to be held in The Gambia in April 2003.
The Gambian Tourism Authority (GTA) and the UK based Responsible Tourism Partnership are organising an international conference to be held at the Kairiba Hotel in Kololi 23-25 April 2003.
This Responsible Tourism in Destinations Conference will provide an opportunity to share experience and consider how tourism can be harnessed to bring greater benefits to developing countries and in particular how larger numbers of local people can gain employment and realise small business opportunities from tourism.
During the opening session there will be national presentations from governments in West Africa and other international speakers.
The final session will focus on an agenda for change and a conference declaration setting an agenda for international, national and local action.
Other sessions will focus on
· The new Responsible Tourism Policy of the GTA which is based on the Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism in Destinations.
· The joint initiative between the GTA and the British Government’s Sustainable Tourism Initiative through the GTA’s Responsible Tourism Partnership, to engage with tour operators in increasing opportunities for local engagement in the tourism industry by developing complementary products and improving market access. The operators and the Responsible Tourism Partnership will report on progress made in implementing change.
· The work of the Association of Small Scale Enterprises in Tourism (ASSET) in developing the informal sector of small scale producers of goods and services in tourism and its programme of work in the Department for International Development’s Tourism Challenge Fund Project in The Gambia.
· There will be two half-day programmes of field visits to project in The Gambia to provide an opportunity to assess practical initiatives to increase the social and economic benefits being earned from tourism by local communities and small scale producers.
A full programme will be published in January when formal invitations will be sent out by the GTA and posted on its website.
