US airline grounds 96 planes

Travellers using United Airlines today should look out for delays and cancellations after the airline grounded all 96 of its Boeing 757s on Tuesday night.

The carrier said the reason was “unscheduled maintenance” and would mean flights would be disrupted for 12-24 hours.

Spokesman Rahsaan Johnson explained: “United is performing follow-up maintenance checks to the air data computers on its 96 Boeing 757s.  All of the air data computers are fully functional. The checks are necessary as part of a modification process to the system."

He added that to check each plane would take about an hour and a half.

CNN reports that the Federal Aviation Authority confirmed the grounding of the planes was so that United could comply with an airworthiness directive.
