US airlines arrive on time in August
The US Department of Transportation reported that flights in the US were more punctual in August, and US Airways performed best.
The Air Travel Consumer Report, published monthly, found that 82.9 percent of flights arrived on time, an improvement from 79.8 percent the previous month, and from 76.2 percent in August last year.
US Airways had the best record, but only by a narrow margin. It had 85.9 percent of flights arriving on time, while Delta Air Lines had 84.6 percent on time, and American Airlines had 83.5 percent of flights arriving on time. Alaska Airlines performed the worst, with 76 percent of flights arriving on time.
The report also picks out which flights are persistently late. Figures show the most delayed flights were Southwest flight 1428 between Cleveland and Baltimore-Washington, Delta flight 1992 between Atlanta and New York JFK, and Alaska flight 153 between Nome and Anchorage. All of these flights arrived late at least 83.87 percent of the time during August.
Airlines in Europe could be subject to similar punctuation reports if the European Commission has its way. It has proposed what it calls a Community Air Passenger Report, which would publish similar monthly statistics regarding air travel delays, and complaints on issues such as mishandled luggage, for Europe.
The proposal has met with mixed reactions from European airlines, and has yet to be legislated. While Ryanair has pledged its support for the production of punctuality tables, other airlines such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have held back, saying they want to know more about how the statistics will be compiled and presented.
