US airlines change ruling on lighters
A rule banning unfilled lighters in checked luggage on US airlines has been lifted.
The US Transportation Security Administration took the decision after Pennsylvania-based Zippo Manufacturing said banning all lighters would lead to a 30% drop in sales.
Last month, TSA officials has banned butane, electric and absorbed fuel Zippo-type lighters aboard all aircraft and in all areas behind airport security gates. Lighters were already banned in checked luggage, but previously passengers had been allowed to have two lighters in their carry-on luggage.
The TSA website has now been amended to say: “All lighters are prohibited as carry on items. Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked in baggage, but lighters with fuel are prohibited.”
Zippo president and chief executive officer Greg Booth said: “The government recognized that a new, never-filled Zippo lighter cannot in any way be construed as dangerous.
Republican senator Rick Santorum, who lobbied for the change, said: “Many people purchase these signature lighters as souvenirs and gifts for friends and family while on vacation or travelling.”
