US extends international landing slot waivers
US airlines will have temporary waivers for international minimum flight requirements at some airports extended again.
Waivers will continue through late October so airlines can maintain their valuable landing slots at busy airports.
Normally, if airlines do not use slots at least 80% of the time, they are liable to lose them.
Waivers have been in effect since the start of the pandemic.
The FAA said it proposed extending the waivers at New York JFK, LaGuardia and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after airlines petitioned the agency.
It said American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines ‘urgently requested continued relief from standard international slot usage rules’ for the 2022 summer season.
Waiver credits will be offered to airlines to keep their slots at Chicago O’Hare, Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
“Changing infection rates and the threat of new virus strains, and the disparity between demand for domestic air travel and demand for international air travel, extending the current limited, conditional waiver for international operations by all carriers, is reasonable,” the FAA said
