US movie director tweets Southwest into trouble

US carrier Southwest Airlines has issued an apology to American arthouse director Kevin Smith after he tweeted about being told by the carrier that he was too fat to fly.

The Clerks and Chasing Amy director used social networking site Twitter to tell his 1.65 million followers how the airline had told him that he would not be able to fly from Oakland to Burbank in California because he did not fit in his seat.

Smith said that he could in fact fit in his seat with the arm rests down and the belt buckled.

Southwest has a 25-year-old policy in place asking outsize passengers to purchase two seats.

However, the airline issued an apology to Mr Smith via Twitter and offered him a $100 voucher.
