US officials preparing airlines for bird flu

Saturday, 14 Nov, 2005 0

US officials are setting up procedures for quarantining sick airline passengers in the event of a bird flu epidemic, according to press reports.

“The Bush administration hopes quick action can contain any US outbreak and has not ruled out travel restrictions,” said Reuters.

Air travel was critical in spreading Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS when the virus spread from Asia to Canada in 2003.

Federal health officials can detain or isolate any airline passengers suspected of harboring the disease.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has increased the number of quarantine centers at large airports partly due to the bird flu threat.

Pacific entry points are particularly being singled out for attention.

US health officials are also reported to be working with airlines to review the cleaning of plane interiors.
