US snowstorms create havoc for airports
Ferocious blizzards continue to cause chaos at US airports, with dozens of flights grounded, including some from Britain.
East Coast cities have been blanketed in record snowfalls, and a number of flights from Heathrow and Manchester were hit over the weekend, the BBC says.
British Airways shelved 18 flights from Heathrow on Saturday to five North American destinations – New York, Boston, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia – and Virgin Atlantic cancelled four outbound flights to New York, as well as five inward flights. Boston’s Logan airport was forced to shut down because it could not keep its runways clear, Reuters news agency reported.
Flights from Manchester to New York and Philadelphia were also axed.
The snowstorms are the worst to hit the US for many years. In some areas, the snow is more than two feet deep, temperatures have plummeted to minus 13, and strong winds have been adding to the problems.
