A US tourist has been convicted of firearms charges in Jamaica.

Nikki Adams, 33 from Georgia, was arrested last week at Sangster International Airport attempting to board a flight back to Orlando.

She pleaded guilty in court on May 12 and was fined JMD600,000 (about $4,880) or 18 months hard labor for illegal possession of a firearm, and fined an additional $4,000 for not declaring the gun to customs officials.

Adams was arrested following a routine bag search when checking in for the Southwest Airlines flight to Orlando.

Officers found a Taurus pistol with an empty magazine in a suitcase.
