Virgin to build Sydney maintenance facility
Virgin Blue Group will build its first new wide-body hangar at Sydney Airport as part of a engineering maintenance base.
It will accommodate up to four narrow-body aircraft, or two narrow-body aircraft and one wide-body aircraft.
Virgin Blue CEO, John Borghetti said, “Having a dedicated maintenance base here in Sydney, complementing those we already have in Brisbane and Melbourne, will create significant benefits to our business in terms of optimising scheduling and network operations and also generating potential revenue opportunities by offering use of the facility to partner airlines.â€
Subject to planning approvals, construction is expected to be complete by late 2012.
Virgin Blue currently operates more than 95 flights through Sydney daily, while 15 to 20 aircraft overnight in Sydney.
