Volunteers sought for Philippines conservation project
Reef conversation group Coral Cay Conservation is appealing for volunteers to help on a project in the Philippines.
The work involves helping to collect biological data needed to establish effective ‘marine protected area’ designations.
CCC says coral dynamiting, nutrient enrichment of coastal areas and sedimentation threaten the health and diversity of the reef ecosystems in the Philippines.
It is looking for volunteers to survey an important feeding ground for a range of marine species such as pilot whales and whale shark.
CCC dirctor of science Dr Craig Tuner said: “Our research is central to the development and initiation of appropriate educational and planning tools which underpin effective marine protected area destinations.
“However, in order for us to undertake a comprehensive assessment of coastal marine resources in the Philippines, we need volunteers to join the project.”
