Weather causes Christmas travel upset
The US and the UK are battling with extreme weather as it threatens travel during the festive period.
Britain is bracing itself for an Atlantic storm today predicted to bring high winds and further rain.
Heavy rain is expected to fall in many parts of the country today followed by storms with sleet and even snow over the weekend.
The Environment Agency has issued 82 flood warnings and 187 flood alerts.
The Thames Barrier, London’s flood defence system, was activated for the first time in two years yesterday to prevent flooding in London but it is thought it will re-open this afternoon.
In the US, 1,630 flights were cancelled on Wednesday due to a severe winter storm moving Northeast, dropping to 788 cancellations in and out of the US yesterday, according to website, FlightAware.com.
Only 77 cancellations were reported in and out of the US today but services may still be subject to delays.
The US National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New England and coastal flood advisories from New York’s Long Island to southern Maine.
