Westjet charging for first checked bag

Tuesday, 16 Sep, 2014 0

WestJet Airlines has climbed on the baggage fee bandwagon and will charge for the first checked bag from next month.

The Calgary-based carrier will charge $25 for a first checked bag for passengers traveling on Econo fares on domestic routes and flights between Canada and the US.

The fee will apply to flights starting October 29.

The airline said around 20% of its business comes from passengers on Econo fares.

Rival Porter Airlines began charging a similar fee for domestic flights in May after introducing bag fees for flights to the US last year.

Air Canada also charges for US flights but there is no first-checked-bag fee on domestic routes yet.

WestJet said Flex fare passengers will get one free checked bag or two complimentary checked bags on a Plus fare, along with free seat selection and extra legroom.
