Wizz Air warns of possible flight disruption from Sunday
Wizz Air is warning that its flights to and from Luton might be disrupted from Sunday if its baggage handlers and check-in staff go through with their threat of a week-long strike.
Those involved in the walk-out are employed by GH London Ground Handling Services, which handles Wizz Air.
In a statement, the airline said: "Wizz Air has been advised of planned strike action by GH London Ground Handling Services employees due to take place between 6pm on March 3rd until 5:59pm on March 10th 2019.
"Should the strike go ahead, Wizz Air flights from London Luton Airport may be disrupted. Whilst this planned strike is beyond our control, we will work hard to ensure that we minimize the impact on our customers. We strongly recommend that all customers flying from London Luton between the above dates check the Flight Status feature on our app or website for real time information.
"Wizz Air sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this regrettable strike action by GH London Ground Handling Services employees."
Union Unite said 96% of employees that took part in a ballot voted in favour of strike action after rejecting a pay deal which they claim is below inflation.
Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said: "GH London only agreed to talks just days before the strike was due to commence, its last minute offer was too little too late. Unite’s door remains open but the company must act urgently if it wants to avert the strike.
"Luton Airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK. A strike by baggage handlers and check-in staff will cause considerable disruption to flights. Baggage handlers and check-in staff deserve an increase in pay so they can keep up with the rising cost of living."
