WTTC partners with GSTC to strengthen sustainability standards
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) have formed a major new sustainable hotels partnership,
It will establish a structured framework for hotels, leading to GSTC Certification.
The partnership endorses the existing WTTC Hotel Sustainability Basics.
It will also lead to the GSTC Hotel Sustainability Certification.
The three-stage framework for sustainable hotels will now see the integration of an intermediate verification phase between the WTTC Hotel Sustainability Basics verification and GSTC Hotel Sustainability Certification.
Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Collaborating with GSTC reinforces our dedication to leading the industry towards a more sustainable future.”
It’s imperative that we work with key global players like GSTC to set benchmarks, and inspire others to follow.”
“It not only elevates our initiative but also a unified vision of sustainability.”
The soon-to-be-launched second and intermediate WTTC verification programme is scheduled to launch in 2024.
This will be the crucial stepping stone between WTTC Hotel Sustainability Basics and GSTC’s rigorous certification.
WTTC Hotel Sustainability Basics meets nine criteria of GSTC Certification.
The intermediate verification step will meet 28 criteria of the GSTC Certification.
When a hotel meets all 42 criteria, they will receive GSTC Certification.
