• 56% of Brits admit they’re craving winter sun to lift their mood during the dark months, new research from MSC Cruises finds

  Brits are going to extreme lengths to get some sunshine during the dark winter months, as new research commissioned by MSC Cruises highlights that nearly a quarter (23%) sit outside in the cold because it’s sunny, with 13% even sunbathing in winter clothes. Some take a simpler approach, with 40% taking Vitamin D supplements and 28% booking a flight to a sunnier location.   Craving Winter Sun   From sunrise alarm clocks to light therapy and even the latest TikTok wellness trends, Brits are trying it all to lift their mood during the dark winter months. Over three quarters (78%) believe that winter has a negative impact on their well-being, with 56% saying that they are craving sunshine to lift their mood and 77% get a mood boost from seeing sunny destinations on TV. Over two thirds (69%) of Brits say they’ve suffered from the winter blues and 59% are struggling more with the winter blues compared to previous years.   Getting through January   Nearly all Brits (95%) agree that it's important to have things to look forward to in January, from the little things that get the nation through the colder months, like indulging in some chocolate for a mood boost or going for a winter walk, to 41% of people saying that they book a holiday to escape the cold.

  The Solution   So, to shine a light - quite literally - on the nation’s winter challenges, MSC Cruises has developed the ‘Sunbrella’.   Holiday must-haves   When they eventually escape on holiday, getting some sunshine is the most important thing for Brits with 50% look forward to getting some sun.   Today, MSC Cruises announced a major new order for four next-generation cruise vessels and two additional options from MEYER WERFT in Papenburg marking the launch of its new “New Frontier” platform - a brand-new class of ships. The order will secure full capacity at the shipyard well into the next decade.   The announcement was made today at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche and Energy Minister-President Lower Saxony, Olaf Lies, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago and MEYER WERFT’s CEO Dr. Bernd Eikens.   Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, said: “MEYER WERFT’s track record, expertise and proud history make it a true beacon of European shipbuilding.   MSC Cruises today revealed an expanded list of entertainment activities being rolled out at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve from January 2026 onwards.   As part of the cruise line’s commitment to offering an outstanding guest experience, these new offerings at Ocean Cay - MSC Cruises’ private island in The Bahamas - will provide families with unforgettable memories and unique moments.   Ocean Cay, a former industrial site, serves as a unique private island destination where guests can relax on eight pristine beaches, explore beautiful turquoise waters and learn about the MSC Foundation’s coral conservation efforts at the island’s new Marine Conservation Centre.   MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique today announced a major extension of their long-standing relationship with orders for two additional World Class ships – numbers 7 and 8 – due to be delivered in 2030 and 2031.   The announcement was made at a double celebration event to mark important maritime milestones for two other World Class ships currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, the float out of MSC World Asia and coin ceremony of MSC World Atlantic.   Valued at €3.5 billion, the orders announced today bring MSC Cruises’ total investment in the four ships ordered in France this year to nearly €7 billion. Together with the World Class vessels already under construction, this brings the company’s total direct investment currently committed in France to €10.5 billion. MSC World Asia will be delivered in November 2026 ready to sail in the Mediterranean and from December will offer seven-night sailings to the most popular destinations in the Western Mediterranean – Barcelona (Spain), Marseille (France), Genoa, Civitavecchia for Rome, Messina (Italy) and Valletta (Malta)   MSC World Atlantic coin ceremony - A traditional coin ceremony for MSC World Atlantic also took place today, when the vessel’s godmothers from both the cruise line and the shipyard placed commemorative coins inside the ship as a sign of blessing during construction and to bring good fortune to the vessel. MSC World Atlantic will enter service in 2027 and will be deployed in the Caribbean Sea from Port Canaveral, U.S, for winter 2027-28.   MSC Cruises’ godmother was Lynn Torrent, Lynn is the President of MSC Cruises North America, overseeing all commercial and operational functions across the region. A seasoned cruise industry executive, she is instrumental in advancing MSC Cruises’ strategic growth across the North American market.   From Chantiers de L’Atlantique, the Godmother was Agnès Sahores, Smart Yard Improvement Manager, who has been working at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique for 25 years. She oversees implementing the company’s improvement plan, which focuses on industrial performance, innovation, environmental efficiency, and collective success.
