California is the most agriculturally diverse state in the US, home to more than 77,500 farms that produce around half of the nation’s fruits, nuts and vegetables. From mushrooms and grapes to dates and almonds, something is always in season in the Golden State. As a result, California offers a wealth of agriculture-inspired experiences, events and festivals that celebrate the iconic produce grown across the state.
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch – March – early May
Every spring, Carlsbad Ranch in southern California transforms into a breathtaking sea of colour, with nearly 55 acres of vibrant Giant Tecolote Ranunculus in full bloom. Visitors can take in the spectacular display aboard tractor wagon rides, offering sweeping views of more than 80 million flowers. For an even more immersive experience, nature lovers can step into the ‘Butterfly Encounter’, a greenhouse habitat where guests, equipped with nectar feeders, are surrounded by hundreds of fluttering butterflies.
Fresno County Fruit Trail – May
The Fresno County Fruit Trail links dozens of family-run farms and fruit stands where visitors can sample the freshest fruit including just-picked nectarines, apricots, plums and table grapes, depending on the season. It is perfect for the whole family as you can embark on a road trip in the summer to enjoy the bounty especially in May where there are a variety of strawberry festivals taking place. Many stops also sell house-made jams, dried fruit, fresh-pressed juices, and baked goods.
Paso Robles Olive & Lavender Festival – 9 May 2026
Both olive trees and lavender plants thrive in Paso Robles thanks to its Mediterranean climate. Celebrated annually at the Paso Robles Olive & Lavender Festival, visitors can enjoy olive oil tastings, live cooking demonstrations and spot the mobile olive oil press. The downtown area is also teaming with purple as lavender begins to bloom. From meeting local lavender producers to enjoying samples, the festival embraces all things lavender and olives.
Gilroy Garlic Festival – 24-26 July 2026
Known as the ‘Garlic Capital of the World’, Gilroy is located an hour south of San Francisco and produces a significant share of garlic for California and the US. Held annually, the Gilroy Garlic Festival celebrates this legacy, featuring everything from creative garlicky dishes, like garlic calamari and even garlic ice cream, to live entertainment and daily demonstrations, including garlic braiding. It’s a unique local tradition well worth embracing.
California Wine Month – September
September marks California Wine Month with the annual grape harvest taking place across the state. Celebrate in the world-famous wine region of Napa Valley with Active Wine Adventures which offers a guided 5km hike accompanied by a picnic lunch and wine tasting, a great way to enjoy the landscapes and local produce. In southern California, Temecula Valley hosts CRUSH towards the end of the month, an annual event which brings together over 30 local wineries and top chefs for an evening of walk-around tastings, live music and mingeling with winemakers.
Mendocino County Mushroom Foraging – October – January
In northern California, Mendocino County is home to a huge variety and abundance of fungi species. The coast in Mendocino County also has the second longest mushroom season due to its mild climate. Visitors looking to try their hand at foraging can venture to Jackson Demonstration State Forest where mushroom hunting is legal. The season typically spans from October to January and visitors can opt to join the Forage Mendocino group for advice on mushrooms which are safe to consume.
Greater Palm Springs, Date Groves – all year round
Thanks to its high temperatures, low humidity and abundant water supplies, Greater Palm Springs in southern California is a rich date-growing region. Head to Shields Date Garden and explore the garden path which winds through some of the 17 acre date groves. For a taste, be sure to stop by the cafe and try some of the options which incorporate dates on the menu including the famous date shake.
