Sweden to charge airport fees based on aircraft climate impact

Sweden plans to crack down on airlines which use high polluting aircraft by charging higher takeoff and landing fees. With effect from July, Arlanda airport in Stockholm and Gothenburg’s Landvetter Airport will base fees on how fuel efficient the aircraft are, such as if they use biofuels.

“This means that takeoff and landing fees can be more significant when a plane’s climate impact is higher and they can be reduced when the climate impact is lower,” said the Ministry of Infrastructure said. The Ministry says it is the first scheme of its kind in Europe.
