WTTC: Time for action on sustainable aviation fuel
The World Travel & Tourism Council urged governments to ‘get serious’ about sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) incentives.
WTTC wants countries to set ambitious targets to produce adequate SAF supply.
Without meaningful quantities, it says the aviation sector cannot decarbonise on a scale that will reach Net Zero by 2050.
The aviation industry is tapping various initiatives to reach net zero.
These include modern fuel-efficient aircraft, operational efficiency improvements, carbon capture and more.
Sustainable aviation fuel is expected to be the main driver of reducing greenhouse gases to achieve net zero by 2050.
WTTC says SAF production rates are insufficient to meet demand and prices remain high.
It says action is needed now to change this.
The global tourism body calls on governments to provide real incentives to encourage investment in SAF production.
They should coordinate efforts through the ICAO, to ensure standardization.
Julia Simpson, WTTC President, said “It is time for governments to take bold action and prioritize the production of sustainable aviation fuel.”
“We are calling on all governments to act now.”
