‘100,000 Buzz passengers could be stranded’
Ireland: Ryanair claimed to be closing routes after take-over of low-cost rival
Ryanair is reported to be “tearing up” the schedule of Buzz, its low-cost rival, after it took over the carrier last month.
As reported, Ryanair took its competitor over for a bargain £15 million last month, and stated that it would “close Buzz down” if a threatened strike over pay and conditions materialised.
Now, according to a report in The Times, the plans of some 100,000 people could be scuppered. All Buzz flights for April have been cancelled, and, the newspaper’s transport correspondent Ben Webster writes, is likely to cut several destinations from its summer timetable. A number of Buzz’s 21 routes, including Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, are likely to be dropped altogether, the newspaper reports.
Buzz confirmed that passengers whose flights were cancelled would receive a refund but no compensation, adding that Ryanair “now controlled the release of all information”. Ryanair told The Times: “You will have to speak to Buzz. We will be announcing details of the reorganisation before the end of February.”
A spokesman for the Air Transport Users’ Council added: “It’s an appalling way to treat passengers but that’s what we have come to expect from Ryanair, sadly.”
