11 hikers killed in southern Italy gorge
At least 11 hikers died after a seven-mile long gorge in southern Italy flooded yesterday.
Another five people are missing after the flash flood in the Calabria region.
Dozens were rescued from the Raganello Gorge, popular with trekkers, after it suddenly filled with up to two metres of rain water, according to the country’s civil protection agency.
More than 30 hikers were believed to be in the gorge at the time of the flood.
Seven people were rushed to hospital, including a 10-year-old boy.
"The problem is we don’t know how many people were knocked over by this flood," Carlo Tansi, the head of civil protection in Calabria, told Sky TG24.
The Raganello stream often floods in winter, but it has never been known to flood in the summer.
