12 cruise passengers killed on excursion
A bus accident in Chile has claimed the lives of 12 cruise ship passengers and left two injured.
All are thought to be American and were on an independent private tour when the crash occured.
The travellers were on Celebrity Cruises’ Millennium on the fourth night of a 14-night sailing from Valpariso in Chile to Fort Lauderdale.
Celebrity said they were on a tour not affiliated to the cruise line when the accident occured.
The ship, which was carrying 1,536 passengers, was remaining in Arica, Chile, until further notice, the company said.
The cruise line’s president Dan Hanrahan said: “I would like to express our deepest sympathies to our guests and their families regarding the deaths and injuries. We continue to make every effort to provide comfort and assistance to our guests and their families who have been affected by this tragic accident.”
More details are expected to be given at a press conference at Celebrity’s Miami base later today UK time.
