14 killed in Nepal plane crash

A British tourist was among 14 people killed when a passenger plane crashed into hills in Nepal yesterday.

The plane had been flying to Lukla, a popular trekking spot in the Mount Everest region of eastern Nepal, but crashed in a village in heavy rain 50 miles south of Kathmandu, the country’s capital.

According to BBC reports, the Agni Air plane was carrying 11 passengers, six of them foreigners. Four were Americans, one British and one Japanese. Three crew also died.

A crisis centre has been set up at Kathmandu Airport to co-ordinate rescue efforts.

Eighteen people, including 12 Germans, were killed when a small plane crashed in 2008 in Lukla.

The sloping airstrip at Lukla is perched on a hillside some 2,800m above sea level and is considered one of the most difficult landings in the world.
