$27 billion Dubai resort venture unveiled
A £27 billion resort development planned for Dubai is to feature the world’s largest hotel.
The Bawadi project outside Dubai city in the UAE state is to offer 29,000 rooms including the 6,500-room Asia Asia hotel, claimed to be the biggest ever.
The first phase of the project, including Asia Asia, is due to be operational by 2010. It aims to accommodation more than three million tourists by 2016.
Saeed al-Muntafiq, chief executive of Tatweer, the Dubai government-owned developer of the venture, was quoted as syaing: “The (reason) for this is the fact that tourism plays a very large role in Dubai’s economy. We need to expand our capacity to accommoate tourists.”
He said that Dubai needed an additional 70,000-80,000 hotel rooms to achieve its target of handling 10 million visitors a year.
