A third of new US entry authorisation applicants from UK
British applicants account for more than a third of the 386,000 people who have applied for a new online authorisation to enter the US.
The US Embassy in London said 37% of all travellers who are signing on to the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) come from the UK.
ESTA registration becomes mandatory from January 12 when all travellers to the US from Visa Waiver Program countries – including the UK – will be required by law to obtain travel authorisation in advance.
But people can only apply online.
“We recognise that there will be a number of travellers who, for one reason or another, might not be able to access the internet to complete an ESTA application,†an embassy statement said.
“In those cases, we recommend that travellers call a friend, family member, colleague or their travel agent – all of whom can fill out an ESTA application on behalf of the traveller.
“Public libraries and their helpful staff are also excellent resources.â€
The ESTA website is at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
