ABTA pays tribute to former president

ABTA has described its former president John Dunscombe, who died last week, as a ‘leading light’.

The association posted on its website on Friday: "Ex ABTA President John Dunscombe passed away earlier this week.

"John was a leading light in the South Wales region as MD of Washington Travel and after serving on various ABTA committees, he became ABTA president in the late 1980s.

"ABTA and its members went through some very difficult times in the early 1990s due to economic turbulence following the first Gulf War.

Under John’s presidency, which saw him also taking on the role of chief executive for a period of time, which he subsequently took up on a full-time basis, ABTA restructured and thrived.

"John combined immense affability with great professionalism, he gave great commitment and long service to our industry and he will be missed."
