ABTA urges OFT to enforce misleading pricing rules
ABTA has renewed a call for all airlines and travel companies to include fuel supplements and all non-optional fixed costs in headline prices to avoid misleading consumers.
The association is writing to all members today to remind them that they should include all non-optional fixed costs and fuel supplements in headline prices by May 9 as agreed with the OFT.
ABTA agreed with the Office of Fair Trading that it would use its Code of Conduct to ensure that its members are advertising prices that consumers can understand.
But the association warned that only the OFT can control the advertising of airlines and non-ABTA travel companies.
ABTA has previously complained about this issue to the OFT and recently raised it in submissions to the Transport Select Committee.
Chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “If the whole industry included all non-optional costs in headline prices, it would save consumers time and raise the industry’s credibility.
“But our members must be able to compete on an equal footing, so it is important that the OFT enforces the law with airlines and non-ABTA members.”
