ABTA’s promise – is it all hype?

In your story ‘ABTA in ground-breaking protection move’, ABTA has again taken the opportunity to present a consumer message at its annual Convention. It’s a great soundbite and just what the press and public want to hear.
After the fiasco of the bed bank vote [where ABTA members voted to tighten up its articles of association to force suppliers to honour bookings from agents in the event of the agent failing], all is OK at ABTA and apparently a further ground breaking initiative is announced. However, we don’t know what it is just yet.
Is this a case of too much procrastination and spin?
Co-op Travelcare managing director Mike Greenacre has backed the move and yet he has failed to allow the Co-op to provide consumer protection under its own banner.
However, we must be patient. Perhaps ABTA can pull a rabbit out of the hat. If so, I’ll happily apologise as this will be good for the consumer and industry. Similarly, I would expect an apology from ABTA if its grand plan fails to live up to the hype.
