Action Plan to grow nature based tourism

Friday, 11 Jul, 2007 0

The National Tourism Partnerships Action Plan, which aims to grow nature based tourism in Australia, while further protecting our parks and wilderness areas for future generations, was launched in Sydney today at the TTF National Tourism and Transport Climate Change Forum, with TTF MD Christopher Brown telling The Mole in an exclusive interview that his objective of holding the Forum was to create an environment of informing and educating and to build lines of communication and cooperation between Government and industry.

He said, “We have to all work together if we are achieve the goal of dealing with the impact of climate change with all that means to our great industry, adding that he was confident that the objectives of the Forum had been more than achieved and tremendous progress had been made toward achieving the goal.”

The Action Plan, developed by TTF Australia with Australian Government funding of $75,000, sets down practical steps to protecting our environment by boosting eco-tourism in our national parks and wilderness areas and the key is stronger partnerships between park managers and tourism operators.

Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said nature based tourism was worth $23 billion to Australia, drawing thousands of tourists each year and supporting environmental sustainability in our most pristine environments, adding, “Sustainable tourism allows more visitors to enjoy our wonderful environment, and help sustain our environment for generations to come.”

“Projects such as the proposed Wolgan Valley eco-resort have suffered from excessive planning delays and State Governments need to lift their game in supporting eco-tourism where it is clearly backed by park operators and wilderness areas on environmental grounds.”

Mr Brown said the Action Plan had been developed in close consultation with the tourism industry, park managers and conservation groups, adding, “I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the development of this groundbreaking Action Plan”.

“I look forward to seeing the recommendations of the Action Plan being implemented, and to the further development of Australia’s nature-based tourism sector.”
