‘Ship’s in’ finally at Jamaica’s Falmouth
Passengers of Royal Caribbean’s Voyageur of the Seas were the first to arrive at the long-delayed Historic Falmouth Cruise Port.
Guests to the port have access to more than 60 attractions in and around the Falmouth area.
Additional attractions include a walking tour of the 240-year-old town, ATV tours, zip-lining, and horseback riding.
The Port is a US$220 million project under development by Royal Caribbean Limited (RCCL) in partnership with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) for the berthing of the cruise line’s Genesis class ship, the newest and largest class of cruise ships.
The grand opening ceremony of the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port will be held later this month, when Oasis of the Seas makes her maiden call into the port. Other Royal Caribbean ships that will be calling at Falmouth include Freedom of the Seas on Feb; Navigator of the Seas; and Allure of the Seas debuting in Falmouth on March 30.
The town is sandwiched between the popular north coast haunts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, both of which are only about 45 minutes away.
Some visitors commented, however, that the Falmouth port was nowhere near ready.
In recent conversations with Cruise Critic, John Terceck, Royal Caribbean’s vice president of commercial development, talked about the many delays.
"Everything is in a temporary arrangement — tours, taxis, food and beverage — because we’re working around the part of the site that’s still under construction," he said. "It’s going to be a beautiful project, but it’s a work-in-progress."
According to Terceck, the retail shops will gradually open in the coming months.
