Aeroflot to drop legendary logo
Russia: Hammer and sickle will finally be consigned to history
One of the aviation world’s most enduring images will disappear later this year when Aeroflot drops its famous “hammer and sickle” logo to coincide with its 80th birthday.
While it is now more than 10 years since the demise of communism and the break up of the USSR, the airline has kept faith with the logo; in fact it is hailed as one of the last companies or organisations to continue to embrace the design.
However, Aeroflot is now keen to rebrand itself in an effort to rid itself of the somewhat less-than-glamorous image it has developed over the decades. The Times today reports that the airline will also be “instructing air hostesses to smile”, passengers will be offered a menu, and the “cool” blue and white colours will be replaced with orange and navy blue.
A spokesman for the carrier also told the newspaper: “Many passengers don’t like the association with the past, with dictatorship.”
